I lost 10% of my followers this morning

I just started using Twitter recently.  In just the last few days I started following people who follow some of the leaders in the tech field.  I built up a following of around 1000, because I want to network about business and my startup.  I've already made some great contacts and had a phone call with another company about the technology.

This morning I decided to start twittering more.  I posted info and a link about Microsoft BizSpark.  Then I posted some nonsense about the name game song using Obama as the name.  Then I replied about a kids CD I had bought.  You can see my tweets here.  http://twitter.com/michaelbuchanan

After doing so I noticed that my followers had dropped by about 100, or 10%.   I wonder why.  Was it that people don't want to follow issues or Obama(I don't like following people tweeting issues either - which it wasn't, and I'm not pro-Obama - there goes another 10%).  They don't like nonsense as it's too much noise.  They are not interested in reading a stream of replies...  or it's the way twitter goes?

Any thoughts?

I'd guess either a) It's the nonsense/noise factor or b) just the way twitter goes.

It may also be due to the use of automated follow-those-who-follow-me tools. I think a lot of twitter users immediately and reflexively follow you when start following them, but then after some time passes unfollow you if your tweets are deemed noise (in terms of what THEY are interested in).

Michael, I have "unfollowed" a few Tweeters. Either they posted way too much (as in dozens of times during the day) or they were posting too much personal/political stuff or they were using one of those tools that spams their Tweeter feed with junk.

Basically, I just got overwhelmed. I'm also tired of all the political Tweets.

Another reason is sometimes people with a website to promote get on Twitter and follow people just to get attention for their website; I've noticed that there are Twitterers who follow a bunch of people at once, and then if those people don't follow them back, instead of trying to build a relationship, they unfollow that user and follow someone else.

I experienced the same a couple of weeks ago - although I only lost about 3 people in one go (which is still 10% cos I don't have that many followers) - due to "noise".

I use this thing called Qwitter that lets me know when someone unfollows me, and all 3 were on the same Tweet which I sent - "Falling sick on your off day sucks". Either they have an aversion to the word "sucks" or they just didn't want to know that I was ill. :)

So far, I like having so many follows in my list . This post got 193 views so far, 4 comment, and 15 replies on twitter. All great info, and a good start to build on. I think there will tools in place to handle the firehose of tweets. and avoid spam following. But being hooked in and accessible is fantastic.

You also picked up at least one new follower, so you got that going for you... which is nice.

But I'm warning you now: if I see a tweet about how great Tony LaRussa and the Cardinals are, I'm out!

And, if you say "screw the pooch" or anything derogatory about dogs, I'm gone... well, not really, but I'm moving to Canada! Well....

I'm also new to Twitter, signed on a few days after I started blogging, because these 2 tools just seem to belong together these days. I'm still trying to figure out whom to follow. The problem is: A lot of important people (at least in the German web and digital marketing business) make a lost of sense in their weblogs. But some of them hardly ever post on their blogs anymore, they just tweet. And some of those overdo their ego-tweets by posting an endless stream of mundane stuff, which I find boring. On the other hand, I think I must follow them, if I want them ever to follow me.

Maybe they are strict republicans. I don't know the feelings in these groups. In my country, Turkey, some people are very sensitive to the political leaders. They have very strong feelings pro or contra.
